Mount Everest at a glance
Mount Everest is the highest mountain above sea level. The summit lies on the border between Nepal in the south and China in the north, where the Tibet Autonomous Region begins. The same mountain is called Sagarmatha in Nepal and Chomolungma in Tibetan. Qomolangma is another spelling used in Chinese official publications.
Most visitors never climb it. You can see the mountain from a one-hour flight out of Kathmandu, from a helicopter trip, on a short hike to a viewpoint above Namche Bazaar, or from the north side in Tibet. This guide covers the mountain itself: its height, the climbing routes, what a summit attempt costs, the risks, and the different ways to see it. It is an independent site, not run by a tourism board, a national park, an airline or an expedition company. Prices are in US dollars, as listed in 2026, and they change.

Ways to experience Mount Everest
Each way of getting close to the mountain has its own rules, costs and limits. Do not mix them up.
From the air
A mountain flight leaves Kathmandu in the early morning and returns after about an hour. You see the range from the window, but you do not land at the mountain. Helicopter trips with a group seat were listed from $1,399 per person for 2026 and 2027.
Everest flights →On foot to a viewpoint
The Everest View Trek climbs to a ridge above Namche Bazaar with a hotel that opened in 1971. One provider lists a 7-day route as an example. It is a hike to a view, not a climb of the mountain.
Everest View Trek →From Tibet
The north face looks different from the south side. Foreign visitors need a Tibet permit arranged through a travel agency, and access can change at short notice.
Everest from Tibet →To the summit
A summit attempt is a multi-week expedition on one of two main routes. It needs a permit, a large budget and serious mountaineering experience.

Good to know in 2026
Where older guides and articles are out of date.
The height is 8,848.86 m
Nepal and China announced this value together on 8 December 2020. The figures 8,848 m and 8,850 m are earlier numbers, not new measurements.
Height explained →The permit costs $15,000 in spring
Since 1 September 2025 the Nepal fee for a foreigner on the normal route in spring is $15,000, not $11,000. It is only the permit, not the price of an expedition.
Costs in detail →No confirmed experience rule
In July 2026 the press still reported different parliamentary proposals, including earlier climbs above 7,000 m. So far this is a proposal, so check the current requirements before you plan.
Climbing rules →The north route was closed in spring 2026
The Associated Press reported the Tibet route closed in spring 2026. An expedition advertised for 2027 does not show that it is open now.
Tibet side →Kami Rita has climbed it 32 times
Guinness World Records lists his 32nd ascent in May 2026. Older articles mention 30 or 31.
Records →Death counts depend on the source
One analysis based on the Himalayan Database counts 339 deaths through December 2025. Another public table lists 344.
Deaths and risks →Trekking to the foot of the mountain
This site stays with the mountain itself.
If you want to walk to the foot of Mount Everest rather than see it from a distance, the Everest Base Camp trek has its own guide. Flights to Lukla, Namche Bazaar, Kala Patthar and the trekking permits are covered there too. For the Tibet side of Base Camp, see Everest Base Camp in Tibet.

How much does it cost to climb Mount Everest?
The Nepal permit alone is $15,000 in spring (2026 fee). A press report from April 2026 gave typical spending of $45,000 to $100,000 for foreign participants, depending on the service. See what it costs to climb Everest.

No. The prices that exist belong to separate things: the summit permit, a flight, a helicopter trip or a trek. The summit fee is not a flight price or a trekking ticket.
Is mount-everest.org an official website?
No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to a tourism board, a national park, an airline or any expedition operator.
Where is the Base Camp trek covered?
On our sister site everest-base-camp.org, including the flight to Lukla, the permits and the stages of the trek. For the north side, use the Tibet page.
